This is the first of three articles for Holiness Today based on Sam Powell's book, Holiness in the 21st Century: Call, Consecration, Obedience Perfected in Love.
Powell writes, "Lately the interpretation of the doctrine of holiness has been changing in subtle and not so subtle ways, with these changes causing some stress and anxiety within the denomination. There is today in the Church of the Nazarene a feeling that the doctrine of holiness may not be as vital a part of our church life as it was in previous decades—that we have drifted from our heritage. If this feeling is based on fact, then allowing such drift would be a colossal disservice not only to our predecessors in the Church of the Nazarene, but also to Christ's church more generally and, ultimately, to God. We believe that God has called us to give testimony to the holy life. Offering this testimony requires that we perpetually attend to the meaning of holiness, especially as expounded in the Bible."
